Top Ten Tuesday #4: Favorite Childhood Books

It's Top 10 Tuesday, hosted at The Broke and the Bookish and the topic is
Top 10 Childhood Favorites

My favorites turned out to be pretty classic books:

1- Anne of Green Gables and all the sequels by L.M. Montgomery.  This book is now available for free downloading on Project Gutenberg
2- The Nancy Drew Series by Carolyn Keene

3- Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.  This book is now available for free downloading on Project Gutenberg

4- The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams.  This is also now available for free downloading on Project Gutenberg

5- Heidi by Johanna Spyri.  This book is now available for free downloading on Project Gutenberg

6- The Chalet School Series by Elinor Brent-Dyer

7- The Little Princeby Antoine de Saint-Exupery.  This is NOT my original copy, that was stolen right off my bookshelf a few years ago.

8- Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates by Mary Mapes Dodge.  This book is now available from Project Gutenberg

9- The Cherry Ames Series by Helen Wells

10- The Bobbsey Twins by Laura Lee Hope This book is now available on Project Gutenberg

Most of these books were hand-me-downs from older cousins, and I inherited them after my sister was done.  Amazingly, I still own them. This was like a nice walk down Memory Lane.

  1. I remember the Velveteen Rabbit always made me cry as a kid ... I don't remember why though, haha ..

Come check out ours at The Blue Bookcase

  2. It has been fun to see eveyone's memories.

  3. Great selections! Several of my favorites as well...and some that have been on my to-read list!

  4. My very favorites as a child were The Bobbsey Twins, The 3 Little Peppers, and Nancy Drew.

    Here's my post.

  5. I remember reading Heidi as a kid and really liking it - the way she spent her days, and the big chunks of cheese they were always eating, was really vivid to me. It never quite became a favourite though.

I love these old editions - are they yours? My mum has some still and oh! It just made me remember What Katy Did, I read my mum's old old copy several times as a kid and really liked it.

    Here's my list.

  6. I, too, loved the Bobbsey Twins and Nancy Drew, Little Women, and Hans Brinker. I also loved The Borrowers. Anybody read those? Also there three books about a girl named Katie John, which I really liked. I also read the Hardy Boys, Encyclopedia Brown and The Boxcar Children.

  7. Lovely walk down memory lane, The old covers are so evocative! Heidi is gorgeous!

Of these, I also loved Heidi, Little Women. Hans Brinker, and Cherry Ames.

Oddly,I never read Anne of Green Gables and didn't know about her. I think I read one Nancy Drew book but didn't bond with her.

  8. Thanks for stopping by, everyone. I also visited some of your Top 10 Favorites and enjoyed reading them and being reminded of books I liked but forgot about, like The Five Little Peppers and the Hardy Boys.
This was a fun top ten.

  9. I think we read the exact same books growing up - I would never have been able to recall them all - so awesome job!
