Their basic premise was that evil could be combated with even the smallest acts of sedition or in the case of the book you reviewed, kindness. It was a call to action for everyone to resist, and that any action toward that end was powerful and meaningful, in fact, that it was a moral imperative for everyone to do whatever they could. And even the smallest person is capable of action spurred by compassion. It is saved from having to be even remotely factually correct, because it doesn't set itself up as non-fiction, but rather as a what-if. In the end, the flowers bloom in the middle of the wreckage as life slowly takes up again, as it will. I don't recall the book being in 1st person at all. There is the idea of purity and youth showing the way where the adults have failed to do the correct thing. Good stuff. White rose is purity, rebirth, new lift, innocence, etc. Also, there is irony here, as she is killed in a reaction of fear -- it's a powerful message about how fear often overcomes our morals and how often good deeds are anonymous.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3966330143385469554.post-75615475363974370062018-02-21T14:50:31.314-05:002018-02-21T14:50:31.314-05:00I am trying to teach this at the moment. I dont' find it a useful teaching tool for WW2 at all, the historical innacuracy bothers me too much. I am also in the UK and it is all in the third person at least.Reehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14884489968485874596noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3966330143385469554.post-5518329275630370582014-12-25T02:46:15.169-05:002014-12-25T02:46:15.169-05:00There are two different editions of this book. No part of the UK edition is first person. I don't tell the students this is historical or realistic the purpose is to show the confusion of war seen through the eyes of a child. I have read his book for twenty years and I always have students who don't realise what has happened to Rose. This is such powerful storytelling. For me this is a very importanf book.Momohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08519100335449886261noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3966330143385469554.post-43303243698723707602012-11-23T12:04:56.621-05:002012-11-23T12:04:56.621-05:00Sorry to hear that this book was lacking in some a...Sorry to hear that this book was lacking in some areas. I liked your honest review and this it was great that you mentioned that this is a good book for kids to read with teachers or home school parents. It sounds like there is a lot of information that needs to be filled in.
