It is amazing to me that a book about the aftermath of war could do that..just goes to show that hope and beauty can bloom in the bleakest of times when fueled by family love, the healing power of nature, and the grace of a loving God!sparrow girlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03945773207784801981noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3966330143385469554.post-78532859209543395382012-12-19T18:39:11.948-05:002012-12-19T18:39:11.948-05:00This is a wonderful book that I have been looking ...This is a wonderful book that I have been looking for for several years. I am thrilled to identify it.<br />Thank you for the review.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02629746305225423600noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3966330143385469554.post-17127734740801021912012-05-18T07:47:43.825-04:002012-05-18T07:47:43.825-04:00Thanks, Stephanie. I found it to be very informative about some of what people were facing in post-war Germany.Alexhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15988251415347075888noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3966330143385469554.post-78391431296750514482012-05-18T07:45:39.465-04:002012-05-18T07:45:39.465-04:00Dorothy, what you write is very interesing. At first I thought Benary-Isbert was writing a very sanitized verison of post-war Germany, but I realized as I went along that everything we have ever heard was in the book, just not graphically detailed. Writers didn't do that in kids books back then. But it is, as you say, an interesting document of the time.Alexhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15988251415347075888noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3966330143385469554.post-39922721651807893902012-05-18T07:41:25.756-04:002012-05-18T07:41:25.756-04:00Zohar, I don't think Benary-Isbert wrote it be...Zohar, I don't think Benary-Isbert wrote it because of anti-Germany sentiment, but more because it was similar to her own experience. In the early fifties, she moved with her husband to this country and lived her till she died. She's written many books, not all about Germany.Alexhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15988251415347075888noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3966330143385469554.post-33747310740867301682012-05-18T07:37:34.390-04:002012-05-18T07:37:34.390-04:00Barbara, I had missed it too although it was on th...Barbara, I had missed it too although it was on the WW 2 bibliography I have been working on. It was lent me by a friend and should have been just the kind of book I would have read growing up. She also lent me Rowan Farm, which I just haven't gotten round to yet.Alexhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15988251415347075888noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3966330143385469554.post-81874292333397126762012-05-17T22:46:16.403-04:002012-05-17T22:46:16.403-04:00I have never heard of this book, but now I want to...I have never heard of this book, but now I want to read it! Not so much is written about the experiences of children in Germany and the countries to the East who were very young when the war ended and experienced things like massive hunger in the population, the trek to the West in many cases, the absence of many fathers in Russian camps for years after the war. Children were no doubt living and surviving from day to day not thinking much about what happened in Hitler's Germany that brought them to this point. Their mothers (usually mothers) were largely occupied in finding food and shelter for their families. I know some people whose childhood was spent in this time, and one of their main memories is the incredible strength of their mothers! This book strikes me a very interesting document of the time.Dorothy Jameshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17199627468549426478noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3966330143385469554.post-21242561448043735362012-05-17T07:33:57.843-04:002012-05-17T07:33:57.843-04:00Another good book Alex. I was born in 1948, so I was a little young when it was first translated into English – but you would think I would have come across it in the intervening years. I’m sure I’ve seen/heard about or read Rowan Farm in the past but not the ark. It’s now on my TBR list.Barbarahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05962552429792516213noreply@blogger.com
